Hami is the name of several small communities located in the east of Kimotsuki Town. Hami’s fishing port, at the south of Shibushi Bay, was once the base for Japanese pirates who raided the Chinese coast during the 17th century.
What makes Hami so special is that is has ocean, mountains, and waterfalls in close proximity. Mt. Gongen is located where the Kimotsuki River meets the Pacific Ocean. There is a parking space near the top of the mountain from which you can reach the summit in about 10 to 15 minutes. The view from the peak is breathtaking and awe-inspiring, to say the least.
In local folklore, the mountain is home to an apparition called “Ittanmomen, ” which was made famous nationwide by the popular comic books of Shigeru Mizuki.
At the base of the mountain, you can see the beautiful waterfalls called “Todoro-no-Taki” or “Todoro Falls” where kids come and play during the summer break. The waterfalls actually stretch further up into the mountains. You can walk up along the mountain road beside the waterfalls, and get to see more of the waterfalls’ beauty and serenity.
